XYZ
This is the XYZ of information. This information doesn't require individual pages, but does need to be addressed.
Absences: If you know ahead of time
that your child will be absent, please, let me know. Whether it's for a
day or an extended period of time, it's necessary I know when a student
will be gone. If I know ahead of time a student will be gone, I can
adjust activities and assignments accordingly. Your child has
obligations in the classroom that must be completed. If your child will
miss a day for something unforeseen (sickness, death in the family,
etc.) please call in that day so I know your child won't be making it in
that day. We do not rely on neighbors or siblings to tell us a child
won't be coming to school that day.
Arrival/Dismissal Procedures: Do not bring your child to school before 7:45am. Please do not bring your child to the classroom before 8:20. This is for safety reasons, since we may be in meetings or other rooms. If they come to the room before 8:20, they will be asked to go to the playground. Always enter the building from the main entrance located by the office. If you are picking up your child before dismissal time, go to the office and they will notify me that you want your child. Dismissal time is at 3:30 (2:15 on Wednesdays) and they will not be dismissed before that time. If you take them earlier, then you will have to go to the office and sign them out. If your child needs to go home with someone else, I need to be notified. I need a note, email, phone call, or verbal directions from you. If you email me, make sure you get a confirmation email from me letting you know I received your email.Thank you for your help!
Backpacks: Each child should have a backpack to carry school items to and from school. Backpacks need to be large enough to fit a folder into. Your child is expected to bring his/her backpack to school everyday.
Birthdays: Your child may bring treats on his/her birthday. Summer birthdays can be celebrated at the beginning of the year, the end of the year, or on your child's half birthday. It is against school policy to send birthday invitations to school unless they are for the ENTIRE class.
Clothing: We do not
have air conditioning in our room. However, some classes we attend do
have air conditioning. Please, dress your child appropriately for the
weather and layers are always better. Boots and snow pants are required
when there is snow on the playground. This includes when the snow is
melting and it is wet and muddy on the playground. Bring a pair of
tennis shoes for your child to keep at school for PE days. Please, label all winter items along
with other clothing items.
Emergency Contact Information: Regularly update your contact information with the office. This is the information we use if your child is sick or in case of an emergency.
Nurse/Medication: I take care of minor hurts in the classroom, such as minor scratches or scrapes. Most of the time, students will only be sent to the nurse if I feel they may be running a temperature, or if they are in some sort of accident on the playground. If your child needs to take medicine during the school day (this includes cough drops), it needs to be sent to school in a labeled ziploc bag, along with a note indicating how much and when the medicine needs to be taken. The nurse is the only person allowed to administer medicine to the children as long as the note is included with the medicine. Please do not send your child to school with a fever. We do not want others in our classroom to become sick.
Restrooms: First grade is special partly because it is the first year the restrooms are outside of the classroom. This can be a HUGE distraction to some children. Students need to learn to manage their time wisely. The rules of the classroom are that students may not use the restroom during direct instruction time (unless its an emergency). Bathrooms may be used during independent work and recess. Please discuss proper bathroom procedures with your child at home. If your child needs special bathroom privileges please let me know and I will be happy to accommodate.
Shoes and Shoelaces: Your child should
know how to tie shoelaces by December. Please work on this at home with
your child.
Snacks: I allow first graders to bring a healthy snack for themselves. We will have snack after afternoon recess. Your first grader does not have to bring a snack, but they can if they want. Examples of healthy snacks include: carrots, apple, popcorn, fruit cups, pudding (don’t forget the spoon!). Students will not be allowed to share or trade snacks. If your first grader wants a snack and does not bring it, then they will not get a snack. Remember, this is completely optional. If you know your child gets hungry before he or she gets home, then a snack might be a good idea to help him/her stay focused. We will not do snack on Wednesdays.
Take Home Folders: Folders will be sent home every Friday.
Please, use the take home folder as a means of sending notes, lunch
money, and homework to school. It is important the folder returns to
school every Monday.
Tardies: A child is tardy if they walk
in the classroom door after 8:30am. At that point, they have to go to
the office and get a note stating whether it is an excused or unexcused
tardy. The student brings the note to me when they come to the
classroom.
Water Bottles: Water bottles are allowed in class, but they may only contain water. Juice, pop, and powder mix is not allowed. Students must be able to open and close their own water bottle. Water bottles will come home every Friday so they can be washed. Water bottles are not required.
